I’m Sorry, I Need to See Your ID

I’m not yet a senior citizen and won’t be officially considered one for many years, but I saw a headline this morning that piqued my interest: Nine Things Seniors Can Do Cheaper Than the Rest of Us.

A further search on the internet revealed that there are some great opportunities for those 55 and over to save some money and do some pretty fun stuff:

  • Get a great hotel room rate at Clarion, Comfort Inn, Econo Lodge, Motel 6, Best Western and Marriott
  • If you are 50 or over (not even officially a senior citizen), you get 10$ off at Banana Republic!
  • On Wednesdays, anyone 60 or over gets a 15% discount
  • Tuesdays at Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Ross get seniors an extra 10% off
  • The first Monday of every month at Stein Mart those 55 and over get an additional 20% off of clearance items (great if you shop all year for Christmas)
  • Clark’s shoe stores gives everyone 62 and over 10% off everyday
  • The first Wednesday of every month at Albertson’s & Kroger Grocery Stores, seniors over 55 get 10% off their groceries (check with the store manager for confirmation)
  • Publix gives seniors 5% off groceries every Wednesday
  • If you’re over 60 show your ID to the ticket window at AMC theaters and get 30% off
  • Regal Cinemas gives seniors over 60 35% movie tickets
  • Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fla., offers people 50 and older $13 off a one-day pass
  • Six Flags Amusement Parks across the country offer discounts – inquire at the ticket window or call ahead
  • SeaWorld in Orlando gives those 50 and over a $3 discount on a one day pass
  • Seniors 62 and over can get a lifetime pass for camping and admission at any National Park or Attraction for $10 PLUS 50% off of additional services within the parks
  • Public Transportation gives seniors a discount with proof of age
  • Amtrak discounts tickets for those 62 and over by 15%
  • In Canada you get 10% off Rail transportation if you are 60 or over
  • If you’re 65 and use Trailways you get a 10% discount
  • Greyhound gives those 62 and over a 5% discount
  • If you belong to AARP and need a rental car, Alamo and Avis five you 25% off
  • Enterprise gives Senior AARP members 5% off, National gives 30% off and Dollar gives a 10% discount to those 50 and over
  • Save on a basic cell phone with Verizon or  AT&T if you are 65 or over, with plans that start at $29.99/month (200 Anytime minutes/500 Nights and Weekends) – If you want SmartPhone plans (internet/data access) that will cost you more
  • Jitterbug gives Seniors a no-frills, basic cell phone for $14.99/month
  • Restaurant Discounts

    • Applebee’s: 15% off  with Golden Apple Card (60+)
    • Arby’s 10% off (55+). Varies by location, please call your local Arby’s.
    • A&W All American Food: Varies by location.
    • Ben & Jerry’s: 10% off (60+)
    • Bennigan’s: discount varies by location
    • Bob’s Big Boy: discount varies by location (60+)
    • Boston Market: 7% off (65+)
    • Burger King: 10% off or a $.75 drink  (60+). (varies by location)
    • Captain D’s Seafood: discount varies on location (62+)
    • Chick-Fil-A: 10% off or free small drink or coffee (55+) (varies by location)
    • Chili’s: 10% off (55+)
    • CiCi’s Pizza: 10% off (60+)

Remember that you don’t get the discounts unless YOU ASK for them.  Just be assertive and ask the simple question, “Do you offer a senior discount?”  People hesitate to assume the more active, younger looking, perhaps surgically enhanced & botoxed seniors of this generation are really “old enough” to receive the discounts, so be flattered and be prepared to show your ID.  I, for one, intend to make everyone ask for my ID when I am old enough to ask for a senior discount.  Hmmm 😉
