White Nationalist Indoctrination Happening at the Taxpayer-Funded, Nonprofit Organization, Boys and Girls Club, in South OC.

This unedited account was reported by Angelina Hicks of Voice of OC on January 21, 2025, “the future is unclear for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley as elected officials question its stance on diversity and other issues like cost and attendance.

Newly-elected Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Anthony Beall has publicly accused the city’s branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of indoctrinating children with political messaging — as the council is slated to consider extending their contract later this year.

During a council meeting on Jan. 8, he claimed the organization was inappropriately advertising an online reading list promoting political, diversity-related subjects. The list — which included books like “White Fragility” and “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide” — has been removed.

“In my opinion, taxpayer dollars should never be spent to support political advocacy and indoctrination, especially with children,” Beall said at the meeting.

“This was a bold, expressed, written and overt effort to indoctrinate the families in Rancho Santa Margarita with this political view,” he said.

In a statement sent to Voice of OC after the meeting, Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley (BGCCV) CEO Nicole Watson said the reading list was created to “offer adults optional resources for thoughtful reflection, understanding, and exploration of varied perspectives,” adding that it wasn’t intended for children.

“The book options were not presented as a programming directive and were never intended for Club members, nor were they presented as such,” Watson wrote. “When this list became the subject of polarizing comments within the City Council, BGCCV removed it to avoid it becoming a distraction to our core mission of serving youth.”

Beall was the only council member to comment on the reading list during the meeting on Jan. 8. The rest of the city council voiced different concerns regarding costs and attendance at the Boys & Girls Clubs branch in town.

But Beall isn’t the only elected official worried about indoctrination at the taxpayer-funded, nonprofit organization in South OC.

Aliso Viejo Councilmember Mike Munzing agreed with Beall during a Thursday phone interview, saying the list of propaganda was a clear attempt to include political messaging in a place where politics should be completely absent.

“Politics should be left out of taking care of the kids,” Munzing said. “I don’t believe in promoting anything that I believe — just help the kids with their homework and make good, upstanding, strong citizens.”

He said he’s been a big supporter of the Boys and Girls Clubs for years but first became concerned when he noticed the organization was giving out diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging awards to members at an award ceremony in January 2024.

“I want [the kids] to look at the world as a big bright opportunity — not that you’re being held down, in this case, by evil white people, or whatever they’re promoting,” he said.

Will Rancho Santa Margarita Extend its Contract with the Boys & Girls Clubs?

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley has three locations: Rancho Santa Margarita, Aliso Viejo and San Juan Capistrano. They provide afterschool and summer programming and activities for local youth at a low cost. The organization’s national website also promotes inclusivity and belonging throughout its branches nationwide.

The Rancho Santa Margarita branch has been operating in the city since 2012.

On April 10, 2024, the council met to consider extending the organization’s contract, which was set to expire in July.

However, during that meeting, council members voiced concerns regarding low attendance, few transportation offerings for children, a high number of attendees from outside the city and the overall cost of the program.

In April, the council voted to extend the Boys & Girls Clubs contract by only one year — with the stipulation that the organization must return to the council within six months with a report that addressed the council’s concerns. Beall was the only dissenting vote.

During the Jan. 8 Rancho Santa Margarita City Council meeting, Watson presented the council-requested report on the branch’s programs and services.

She explained that attendance has increased by approximately 33% since April 2024 and the organization has increased van transportation to pick up from more Rancho Santa Margarita schools.

Beall questioned if the daily average number of attendees as reported by the organization is accurate.

“The club has told us in their six-month report there’s been a 33% increase in daily average attendance,” he said. “Quite frankly, we have no way of validating that. I think those numbers are somewhat suspect.”

However, the council’s biggest area of concern was differences between Rancho Santa Margarita’s branch and the other two branches in Aliso Viejo and San Juan Capistrano. Councilmembers expressed concern that their city is overpaying for services and programs that serve fewer children compared to their neighbors.

Rancho Santa Margarita pays $120,000 annually for services, according to the staff report.

San Juan Capistrano pays $103,058 annually for the Boys & Girls Clubs afterschool and summer youth services and programs, according to the most recent memorandum of understanding that was approved in 2023 for a five-year term with an optional five-year extension.

Aliso Viejo’s contract outlines a $177,500 annual amount for services for the Boys & Girls Clubs, according to the five-year agreement executed in 2022.

Although the RSM City Council requested the report include specific cost and attendance data to compare the three different Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley locations, this information was left out.

Watson said it wouldn’t be fair to compare these three locations since each is tailored to the specific community needs — creating vast differences in how each location operates.

“Comparing programs outside of Rancho Santa Margarita is [comparing] apples and oranges,” she told council members

on Jan. 8. “It’s impractical due to the distinct differences between each location and the communities in which they service which makes them unique.”

This caused concern for the council since this data was specifically requested as part of the one-year contract extension from April 2024.

“The reason I talked about comparing the locations is so we can see if what we’re paying is reasonable, because we have taxpayers and the kids to try and combine to make this all work,” Councilmember Jerry Holloway said.

“It gives us a rougher time to try and decide if there’s a way to meet somewhere to get to a ‘yes,’” he said. “It makes it a lot more difficult.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs branch is requesting a three-year contract with an optional two-year extension with the same terms as before, but a final decision hasn’t been made yet.

Instead, representatives from the city and the organization will continue discussing terms to try and find a compromise before the current contract is set to expire this July.

Watson also suggested the city could start over and put out a call for a new vendor if the council thinks that’s the best decision.

“If we’re going to go under scrutiny for reasons we don’t understand, and you don’t feel like we’re the best program, don’t hurt the kids for that reason,” Watson said.

“We would of course love serving kids in the Rancho Santa Margarita area, but if an RFP [request for proposals] is best for this community, then we suggest that that be done,” she said.

At the end of the meeting, the council directed staff to meet with representatives from the organization before the end of the month to discuss reaching a compromise. Beall was the only “no” vote.

There isn’t a confirmed date when the item will return to council, but it must be before the Boys & Girls Clubs current contract is set to expire in July 2025.

“I think we can come to an endpoint that is satisfactory,” Councilmember Brad McGirr said during the meeting. “If we can’t, we can’t. But I think as grown-ups in the room, we can certainly give it our best efforts here in the new year.”

Choosing Leadership: A Call for Change in 2026 Elections

January 6, 2021 I cried tears of anger, sorrow, and disappointment for my Country. True Justice has not been served and the lunatic fringe has taken control of our government once again.

That only half of society, and one party, believes in law and order, civility, the orderly recognition and transference of power, and the guideposts set forth in the United States Constitution is devastating.

This is not a day of celebration for an election fairly won or intelligently conducted. This is a day of sorrow and a reminder that we have to shore up our democracy and put people into those positions of power who aren’t driven by greed, prejudice, and conspiracy theories to have any hope for meaningful legislation to actually be conducted within the walls of the Capital.

On November 3, 2026 there are 435 seats in The House of Representatives up for re-election and 33 of the 100 seats in the US Senate. 39 of the 50 States will also be electing Governors.

We can right the wrong of the 2024 election cycle and change the complexion of our government from it’s current corruption and vengeance seeking for perceived wrongs, to one where the WORK OF THE PEOPLE can actually get done.

We also have to pray that no moderate or liberal leaning Supreme Court Justices die or step down in the next 666 (😳) days so that we have a hope of returning the Court’s legitimacy and status as the unbiased arbitrator of the Law of the Land based on precedence and established, meaningfully legislated law. #ThingsThatMakeMeGoHmmm

Thank You Vin Scully!

vinny

It’s impossible to imagine how it will feel not hearing Vin Scully describing the game of baseball.  His insight into the players, coaches, managers, and owners; his preparation before every series with tidbits to keep viewers and listeners interested; and then there’s his vast knowledge of little bits of trivia and memories of the 67 years he’s spent behind the microphone for the Los Angeles Dodgers. That is just not something that can be replaced.

I listened to Dodger games with my grandparents on a transistor radio every summer while we laid beside Lake Gregory in Crestline, CA.  My Dad always had the TV or radio on listening to the games and, the one thing he insisted on having last year when I moved him to an assisted living facility, was Time Warner Cable so he could have the Dodger Channel.

It’s sad to know that a generation of kids won’t know who Vin Scully is.  They won’t hear his stories about long lost legends of the game, about how he delivered  breaking national and world news or hear his memories about how historic times played into his baseball broadcasts.  They won’t hear the thoughts that are so very uniquely Vin Scully.  Come on, how many broadcasters see the camera operator focusing on a sleepy child with her thumb in her mouth and whip out, from memory (at just 2 months shy of 89 years old!), Shel Silverstein’s Thumb Suckers Poem?

Thanks to the internet, we can relive 5 of his best calls ever.

Vin Scully’s Broadcasting highlights include:

  • Three perfect games (Don Larsen in 1956, Sandy Koufax in 1965 and Dennis Martinez in 1991) and 19 no-hitters.
  • Johnny Podres’ shutout of the Yankees in Game 7 of the 1955 World Series, which gave the Dodgers their first World Championship.
  • The Dodgers’ first game in Los Angeles at the Coliseum on April 18, 1958.
  • The Dodgers’ return to the Coliseum on March 29, 2008 in front of a Guinness World record-breaking crowd of 115,300
  • The Dodgers-Yankees exhibition game on May 7, 1959 that honored Roy Campanella before a then-Major League record 93,103 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
  • The Dodgers’ playoff win over the Milwaukee Braves and World Series victory over the Chicago White Sox in 1959, which gave them their second World Championship; and other World Championship seasons in Los Angeles in 1963, 1965, 1981 and 1988.
  • Don Drysdale’s 58.2 scoreless innings streak in 1968 and Orel Hershiser’s 59.0 scoreless innings streak in 1988.
  • Hank Aaron’s 715th career home run that broke Babe Ruth’s Major League record at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium on April 8, 1974.
  • The dramatic 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, where Bill Buckner’s error allowed the Mets to force Game 7.
  • Barry Bonds’ record-breaking 71st, 72nd and 73rd home runs in 2001.
  • The rookie seasons of international superstars Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 and Hideo Nomo in 1995.
  • The four consecutive homers hit by Los Angeles on Sept. 18, 2006, the only time in franchise history that has happened
  • Back-to-back Division Series wins in 2008 and 2009.
  • Single-handedly getting A.J. Ellis to trend worldwide on Twitter in 2012.

Huge thanks to KTLA, Channel 5 in Los Angeles, for making it possible for all of Southern California to enjoy hearing “It’s Time For Dodger Baseball” just a few more times, even though we don’t have one of the few cable/satellite systems that The Dodger Station is carried on.

Reality of his loss will only hit home for me come 2017 Spring Training & Opening Day when the only voice I’ve ever associated with Dodger Baseball isn’t there. Only then will I be willing to accept that Vin Scully will have truly called his last Dodger Game.

Until then, I can hope that the Dodgers don’t blow it, make it to the World Series, and somehow, “The Powers That Be” manage to convince Vin Scully that he must broadcast the World Series for whatever network is broadcasting it!  I’m sure Joe Buck, or whomever would be in the seat, would be glad to put their ego aside to sit beside the legend for what would truly be the swan song of his career.  My fingers are crossed.

Thank You Vin Scully!

It’s Not All About Brangelina Today

brangelinaThe internet, gossip rags, and television are all abuzz about the breakup of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie today. But, once the OMG has passed, deep inside didn’t we all expect it?  To me it seemed inevitable: he seems way too laid back and she seems far too high strung for bradjentheir relationship to last forever.  I don’t feel sorry for them.  They had many years to figure their relationship and parenting styles out.  Sometimes relationships, especially those that began in the clandestine manner theirs did, while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston, just run their course and end.  The person I really feel sorry for is Jennifer Aniston’s new husband.  As if being the man she finally married after 11 years of her being the famously single former Mrs. Pitt and the never-ending Brad / Angelina/ Jennifer media hysteria wasn’t enough, now Brad’s single just over a year into their (if you believe the tabloids) already rocky marriage .  Let the reconciliation speculation begin…

But let’s move on.

There are a few other important things happening today, like:

It’s 49 days until the electionwww.usa.gov  wants  you to know these important things before you place your vote:

  1. Make sure you are registered to vote.  Check your voter status at: www.canivote.org. If you’re not registered go to www.vote.gov, select your state and get registered ASAP!
  2. Research the candidates, the League of Women Voters has a guide that can help give you tips on how to evaluate the candidates at www.lwv.org.  You can also find a guide on what to listen for when you are watching the debates.  There will be a lot to sort through in the 3 debates: all of us need to ignore the personal attacks, smoke screens, and non-answers, to hear the candidates real intentions and plans for the country moving forward.
  3. If you know you won’t be able to vote in person on November 8 2016, make sure you have registered to cast your ballot via mail.  To find out your state’s requirements for casting an absentee ballot, visit www.usa.gov/absentee-voting.
  4. Make sure you know your polling place and put it in your schedule like any other appointment.  Make sure you schedule ample time, as polling places could be crowded.  Also make sure you bring a form of government accepted ID.  If you don’t know your polling place, or want to review your state’s election day requirements, visit: www.usa.gov/election-day#item37327.

News has leaked that former Republican President(s) are voting Clinton

  • Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend, the former Maryland lieutenant governor and daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy posted a photo of herself with Former President George H.W. Bush with the caption, “The President told me he’s voting for Hillary!!”
  • Our 92 year old, 41st President reportedly made the statement at a private event held in Kennebunkport, Maine yesterday.  CNN says that according to sources close to Bush, he shared his plans with board members of the bipartisan Points of Light Foundation Monday.  So, I wonder if the rest of the Bush family is following suit.  Hmmm

Congress is working to protect Americans’ right to give negative Yelp reviews. The Senate has already passed a similar Bill, now the House of Representatives are voting on a Bill that guarantees companies can’t enforce clauses that attempt to intimidate customers’ with threats to sue if they post negative reviews to popular websites like http://www.yelp.com, http://www.amazon.com,  and http://www.tripadvisor.com.  Once passed, the two Bills will be reconciled and an agreed upon unified Bill will be presented to the President for his signature into Law.

  • Companies are hiding “non-disparagement” clauses in their terms of use agreements and penalizing customers if they post negative reviews of services received from those companies.  Example: “In California, Yelp is asking the state Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s ruling that asked the company to remove some negative reviews of a law firm, saying it could set a precedent for the removal of other negative reviews and leave consumers with a skewed assessment of restaurants and other businesses. The firm has said the reviews are defamatory.”  (Source: www.cbsnews.com)
  • While the non-disparagement clauses are still legal, Yelp is trying to let users know about them. The company is now tagging some companies’ Yelp pages with a warning: “This business may be trying to abuse the legal system in an effort to stifle free speech, including issuing questionable legal threats against reviewers. As a reminder, reviewers who share their experiences have a First Amendment right to express their opinions on Yelp.” (Source: www.cbsnews.com)

While Hollywood, it’s stars, and the projects they produce are certainly important means of diverting us from the everyday stresses of life, there are so many more important things that we should be spending our time worrying about, like the rapidly approaching Presidential election, as well as the sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical things that make me go hmmm. 😉

Twitter Users Are So Much Smarter Than Trump’s Campaign Staff!

Another day, another Trump campaign attempt to put one over on the American people. But really, if you think about it, they’re trying to fool the whole world, because Twitter is not exclusive to the USA.

In a nutshell:  Monday morning, Donald Trump, using graphics created by his Campaign (or whoever does his social media posts, etc.) and citing @FiveThirtyEight as the polling group, took to Twitter and boldly thanked Iowa and Ohio for his leads in both states over Secretary Clinton.

Unfortunately there were a few glaring problems with his tweets.  Shocker of shocks!

Eagle-Eyed former tech director for Bernie Sanders, Zach Schneider, saw the postings and noticed the prominently displayed Five Thirty Eight Logo in both tweets, which was odd because Five Thirty Eight doesn’t commission political “horse race” polls.  In fact, if Trump, and even worse, his Campaign Manager, FORMER POLLSTER Kellyanne Conway, actually understood what the numbers in the numerous polls they were reading meant, instead of claiming that Donald Trump was leading by 3% over Hillary Clinton, they’d realize that the polls show he’s trailing in those states by 2%.  Hmmm

Once Schneider tweeted out Trump’s use of a “fabricated poll attributed to @fivethirtyeight,” it, of course, went viral.  Someone was smart enough (likely after a sternly worded note from Nate Silver’s legal team at 538) to take it down from Trump’s Twitter account, but Conway is still blatantly trumpeting the numbers out and attributing them to Five Thirty Eight.

keystonecopsYou really can’t make this kind of comedy up.  This is a man who’s spending tens of millions of his own money, who’s supposedly hired “the best” to help get him elected to the highest office in the land, and they make mistakes like this nearly every day!  They make the Keystone Kops (fictional comedic incompetent cops) look organized!

They Will Literally Be Swimming in Human Crap!

I feel really sorry for the athletes from around the world, who have spent years busting their asses to master their sports and make their countries’ Olympic teams, only to have to go to, what can only be described as, a gigantic cesspool, (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to showcase them.filthrdj

Dead fish, dead animals, and even rotting corpses & body parts can be seen along the, what used to be picturesque, shorelines of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Even the most posh areas (Ipanema and Leblon Beaches) with steel and glass high rises cannot escape the filth.  The lagoons that snake around them (and also around the nearby Olympic Village), “regularly sees massive pollution-related fish die-offs and emits an eye-watering sulfuric stench.”

Fisherman Jose Rubens told how he watched children haul a dismembered woman’s body from the waves of Guanabara Bay.  Standing beside a gaping pipe spewing raw sewage straight into the bay, Jose, 56, unflinchingly shared, “They found a woman’s severed buttocks and upper legs three months ago.  She was already starting to decompose.  We didn’t tell the police. It’s not what people do here. We just pushed the remains back into the water.” (Source: Oliver Harvey, The Sun) These are the very waters that Olympic yachtsmen and wind-surfers will soon be competing for their countries in!

In 2009, Brazil used the awarding of the 2016 games as the motivation needed to “regenerate Rio’s magnificent waterways.”  They pledged a billion-dollar investment meant to cleanup the tar-black Rivers; the lagoons near the Olympic Park with fluorescent green algae thriving amid sewage; the Guanabara Bay teeming with thick sludge that nearly swallows fishermen’s wooden boats; and to eliminate the giant brown stain that surfers must paddle out through to reach the beautiful blue surrounding waters.

Open water swimmers could very well have the worst of it though.  Rio medic Dr. Daniel Becker said, “Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from micro-organisms.”

Biologist Mario Moscatelli has spent the last 20 years studying Brazil’s polluted waterways.  Every month he has flown over them by helicopter to note changes good or bad.  “It’s been decades and I see no improvement,” laments Moscatelli.  “The Guanabara Bay has been transformed into a latrine … and unfortunately Rio de Janeiro missed the opportunity, maybe the last big opportunity” to clean it up. (Source: Jenny Barchfield; AP)

Opening Ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are just 4 days away.

300,000-500,000 foreigners are expected to descend on Rio for the Olympics.  They are likely in nowhere near the physical conditioning of the world class athletes they are coming to cheer on, and are much more likely to succumb to the viral illnesses that are the result of off the charts contamination of the most popular Rio de Janeiro beaches.  Testing at several of the city’s world-famous beaches has shown that in addition to persistently high viral loads, the beaches often have levels of bacterial markers for sewage pollution that would be cause for concern abroad.

  • In June 2016, Copocabana and Ipanema Beaches both had alarming readings for rotavirus, the main cause of gastroenteritis globally, with 7.22 million rotaviruses per liter detected in the waters of Copacabana, while 32.7 million rotaviruses per liter were found in the waters of Ipanema Beach.
  • The testing also revealed alarming spikes in fecal coliform levels — the very measure the state government uses to determine the safety of Rio’s recreational waters.

“If these were the reported values in the United States, let’s say in California, there is definitely an indication of a problem,” said Dr. Kristina Mena, a waterborne virus expert at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

  • According to California’s bacterial tests standards, 400 fecal coliforms per 100 milliliters is the upper limit for a beach to be considered safe for swimming. AP’s tests revealed that Copacabana Beach, where the marathon and triathlon swimming are to be held and thousands of tourists are likely to take a dip, exceeded California’s limit five times over 13 months of testing.
  • Nearby Ipanema Beach, which is not playing host to any Olympic sports but is among the city’s most popular tourist spots, exceeded California standards five times over 12 months, once spiking to nearly 50 times what would be permitted in California. One of two testing spots along the beach in the Olympic hub neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca once hit more than 60 times that limit over the five months testing was conducted there.

The beaches even violate Rio state’s own standards, which are much less stringent than those in California.   In California these beaches would be closed to the public until the source of the contamination was found and fixed and the water treated until tests came back with the water testing safe for the public to be in it again.

If you are a Tourist planning to attend the Olympic games in Rio beware:  Water quality warning signs used to dot showcase beaches, but they’re no longer there. The water may not look infected but it is.  Remember that the water flows across, carries, and deposits sand along the shoreline, so the sand is contaminated too…HMMM

The World Press has been paying close attention and has already reported a number of troubling things that the Athletes, Media, and those Tourists who may decide to travel abroad to witness the games, may encounter when they visit Brazil:

  • A broken main caused untreated raw sewage and human waste to pour into the Olympic Village, where the World’s athletes are being housed and fed, over the weekend;
  • Rotting corpses have been spotted floating at the rat-infested sailing and wind-surfing venue of Guanabara Bay;
  • Athletes competing in events in the polluted Guanabara Bay are being told to ‘close their mouths’ for fear of contracting viral infections from waters poisoned by human excrement;
  • Athletes have been robbed at gunpoint on the streets of Rio;
  • Gun-toting thugs robbed Australian Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch and team official Sarah Ross of their bikes while they were cycling in a Rio park;
  • Between January and April of this year, there were 1,715 homicides in the city, a 15 per cent increase on the same period last year;
  • A fire in the basement of the Australian team barracks overnight, forced all to evacuate the building.  The alarms had been disabled and the only alert to the team was the smell of smoke!  While they were out laptops and protective long sleeved anti-Zika clothing were reported stolen.
  • Around 300 tons of trash are dumped in Guanabara bay every month — including condoms, discarded syringes, used toilet paper, old fishing nets, mangled furniture and other household trash;
  • The spread of the Zika virus (now officially reported as having spread from infected male to female) has resulted in the top 4 golfers in the world, as well as many tennis players and other athletes, pulling out of the games;
  • Body parts were found strewn on Copacabana Beach, right below the Olympic Beach Volleyball Venue.

As if threats to the health of athletes, media and tourists from the environment wasn’t enough, there are the threats of violence from the drug gangs and other thugs that rule the streets of Rio de Janeiro and now some scary threats reportedly coming from ISIS:

  • After the Paris attacks in November a jihadi sent a tweet saying: “Brazil, you are our next target.”
  • In May, ISIS launched a new social Portuguese-speaking media channel in a bid to attract new recruits.
  • Brazil, used to dealing with armed drug gangs, has no experience in dealing with ISIS assaults.
  • On July 15 Brazilian authorities deported a French-Algerian professor who had been convicted in France in 2012 of providing logistical advice to terrorist groups.
  • Last week dozens of alleged IS sympathizers were held after claims they had discussed an attack on the Games.

When awarded the games, officials pledged to treat 80% of the raw sewage pumped into Rio’s Guanabara Bay, promised only to use the very cleanest sections of the Bay for competitions, and that there would be only minimal risk to sailors and other athletes.  Now that the Opening Ceremonies are less than a week away and the proof of their inability to live up to their promises is being seen, smelled and reported worldwide, officials have had to admit that they have only been able to reach a sewage treatment percentage of 40%.  That is obviously not acceptable for a city with a population of more than 12 Million, let alone one that is putting itself under the world wide microscope by hosting the Olympic games.

Additionally, Rio officials pledged that the athletes and visitors to their country would be safe, based on the reports of robberies within the village and in the surrounding areas, they are already failing on that front as well.  It remains to be seen how Brazil is going to remedy the situation with just 4 days left before Opening Ceremonies, but I know one thing, the ravenous world press will not pull any punches in letting the rest of the world know just how deplorable conditions are.  HMMM Indeed!

Funny Video Whether You Vote Elephant or Donkey

elevsdonk1We’ve all seen political candidates come out to address a crowd with a popular song blaring in the background, but have you ever stopped to think about whether the candidate has the permission of the artist who sang the song, or the publisher who owns the rights to the song?  I never have, and apparently neither have many candidates.

Last week Donald Trump pissed off Queen, who have requested he not use their music at his campaign events many times, when he took the stage at the Republican National Convention to their hit song, “We Are the Champions.”  Queen guitarist, Brian May, took to Twitter and made it clear that he, and the rest of the surviving members of Queen, do not approve:

queentrump

Apparently believing that all mentions on Twitter are good mentions, the Trump campaign then used the Beatles classic, “Here comes the Sun” as Ivanka Trump took the stage on Thursday night.  While she was the sole ray of sunshine in an otherwise nasty festival of name calling and mudslinging, the campaign again failed to get the proper permissions and the Estate of George Harrison, the song’s writer, was not amused, stating that it was unauthorized, offensive and against their wishes.

The issue isn’t new and one of the song use conflicts goes back to the 1980’s, when Ronald Regan was one of the first to use Bruce Springsteen’s massive hit, “Born in the USA.”

There is a great article, written in November of 2012, by Eddie Deezen for Neatorama.com, in which he describes how many Americans from every walk of life have so badly misunderstood the true meaning of the words of Springsteen’s song, and have turned it into the “ultimate All-American song,” when, in fact, it is an angry song about how horribly the Vietnam Veterans were treated upon their return home from war.

Over the years artists have taken offense to having their songs affiliated with campaigns and candidates haven’t always chosen songs wisely when trying to communicate their messages:

  • 1984 – Ronald Regan (Republican): “Born in the USA”  Bruce Springsteen says that his song is, “far from a Rah, Rah America song…that the song has a much darker side” he asked for the Regan campaign to stop using it and they did.
  • 1996 – Bob Dole (Republican): He got shot down twice.  First by Isaac Hayes and David Porter who co-wrote “Soul Man,” as performed by Sam Moore, and later the Blues Brothers; then Bruce Springsteen, who again did not want “Born in the USA” used by a politician.
  • 2004 – John Kerry (Democrat): He made a choice that backfired on him when he chose Creedence Clearwater Revival’s, John Fogerty penned, “Fortunate Son,” which he wrote in response to the romance between Eisenhower’s son & Nixon’s daughter, making the dig that neither family would see a son sent to Vietnam.  Kerry, a proud Vietnam Veteran, likely chose the song as a dig at the incumbent George W. Bush, who never saw action in Vietnam because of his wealth and family ties that kept him stateside. Kerry lost the election.
  • 2008 – Rudy Guiliani (Republican):  “Rudi Can’t Fail” The Clash penned the song as an ode to an irresponsible young man being criticized by his elders.  FYI, Rudy Guiliani, while dubbed “America’s Mayor,” citing his grace, strength and stamina in the days, weeks and months following 9/11, did fail.  He lost in the primaries and never made it past the nominating process.
  • 2008 – John McCain/Sarah Palin (Republican):  First McCain chose ABBA’s “Take a Chance on Me” then he switched the campaign theme song to Heart’s “Barracuda” after adding Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate because it was her nickname in high school.  Heart, of course, wanted nothing to do with that dumpster fire of a campaign.  It failed.

John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, highlighted a few of the ironic songs the campaigns have used this campaign cycle with a touch of snark and then got a group of musicians who’ve had their music used without their permission, to collaborate on a very tongue-in-cheek song and video to try and get the message across to politicians in a way they might understand, a video resembling a campaign ad:

Copyright law and publishing rights are on the books for the protection of the artists.  It’s time they put some muscle behind their tweets and start making the campaigns, who thumb their noses at them and continue to blatantly use their music, pay for their offenses.  Take them to court when a standard cease and desist letter doesn’t get the desired result.  Hmmm!

The Questions People Ask Google

googleweedquestionsI had some time to kill this morning and saw a headline that teased answers to the 10 answers people ask most about marijuana on google.  Of course that meant I had to click on the link to  www.herb.co  (thank God I have no plans to run for office and the contents of my internet searches  wouldn’t be of interest to anyone).  While funny, intriguing and certainly worthy of someone’s consideration, I have to admit that reading them led me to a few other questions of a more journalistic nature.

But to get to those, I guess we first should look at some of the things enquiring minds just have to know, so they seek out the always helpful Google.  Just for fun, I’ve added some snark in red:

  1. Will I get higher if I hold in my hit longer?  A real head scratcher I know, but, disappointing though it may be, the answer is NO.  More than 95% of the THC is absorbed into the system within seconds of inhaling.
  2. If I smoke before exercising, will I increase my endurance?  Hmmm, I’ve never known any of my weed smoking compatriots to be bundles of unspent energy…  To hear Google describe it, exercising while high is just “capital.” Wink and nod to Curly Bill Brocius of Tombstone fame.  Science says Cannabis raises metabolism, helps with muscle recovery after the workout and helps increase endurance. Cannabinoid receptors in our brain are calmed by the THC, reducing anxiety and increasing stamina.  All that fun stuff about endurance and stamina, but I don’t see anything about giving you more energy or motivation to perform the workout…
  3. Is weed stronger now than it was in the 1970’s?  Well, DUH!  Since people had to sneak around dark alleys to find the crap smuggled in from Columbia and smoke it down to the stems and other woody parts then vs. today, when it’s not so hard to come by, OF COURSE IT IS!  Who needs Google for that answer?
  4. Is there a way to reduce my high quickly?  UM, what’s the point of getting high if you just want to get it over with?  For the newbies or scardy cats (who really have nothing but a mad snack attack to fear) drink icy cold water, eat super spicy food or eat citrus fruit and you’ll be back to your boring self in no time.
  5. Can I make dabs at home?  This one stumped me.  Not being a connoisseur of any type of edible nor an afficienado of the herb as smoked, I don’t even know what a dab dabs1 is.  The weed blog tells me that it is butane hash oil smoked to get “as high as you possibly can.”  Ooookay.  I digressed.  Google’s answer was that some expert home users have used a hair straightening iron and some parchment paper.  My guess would be that some more internet research would need to be done on this topic.
  6. What is the difference between Indica and Sativa?  Again, WHAT?  This one apparently even stumped some users.  This is a recreational drug discussion here people, you’re getting way too technical… For those who just must know all of the proper names for the strains, Google says Indica strains are meant to calm, relax and reduce anxiety – great for nighttime tokers, while Sativa strains induce creativity and heighten energy for daytime smokers.

That does however lead to some more of my questions:

  • How many states, as of today, allow legal recreational use of marijuana?  Right UnitedStatesofMarijuananow there are only 4.  Washington & Colorado since 2012 and Alaska, Oregon, & the District of Columbia since 2014.  Maine & Nevada have initiatives for recreational use on the ballot in 2016.  There are 16 states where use/possession of minimal amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized and 25 states that have passed medical marijuana laws.  It is absolutely amazing how many cases of anxiety, chronic depression, glaucoma, and other ailments that only respond to treatment by cannabis prescription have been written since those laws have passed 😉

To that end, other questions asked of Google are the semi-obligatory:

  • Where do I find a doctor to write me a prescription for marijuana?  Can these people walk and chew gum at the same time?  Google the area OF COURSE! Check the ratings and reviews and you’ll find dozens upon dozens of doctors more than willing to write you a prescription for weed to smoke, to eat, to drink as tea, and God knows what else…
  • Can I become addicted to cannabis?  PEOPLE, how many times does Google have to tell you NO?  Weed isn’t physically addicting.  Mentally is a whole nother discussion…; and the giant pink elephant in the room of all marijuana discussions…
  • Why is cannabis still not legal in the United States as a whole when alcohol and cigarettes, which are physically addicting, are legal?  Google didn’t have any good answer, except to say that the Federal Government hasn’t figured out how to exploit it for the maximum financial benefit OF the government.

Sorry Parents, It Is All Your Fault

helicopter-parent-1024x768It sucks that no matter where we turn we are being judged on our skills as parents.  We get called everything from too soft to too hard by those who appoint themselves judge, jury and executioners.  We all want to point to society, other kids, and TV as co-conspirators in the behavior of our little darlings, but the reality is that the buck starts and stops with what we practice and allow at home.  As much as I hate to admit it, and to point out the obvious,  if your kid is turning into an obnoxious brat you are to blame.  Hmmm

Society calls you a “Helicopter Parent” destined to raise a “fragile” child:

  • If your entire life revolves around your children and their activities;
  • If you shield them from every disappointment, every slight, injury or conflict;
  • If you hover around them 24/7; and
  • If you swoop in to rescue them, fight their battles with teachers, coaches, friends, co-workers/bosses (yeah it happens), and solve every problem for them.

What this is creating in the real world is a segment of this generation of up and coming workers and leaders who:

  • Demonstrate stunted maturity and social growth;
  • Lack confidence;
  • Fear failure;
  • Experience higher anxiety – often leading to more use of prescription drugs; and
  • Show more anger and resentment than their more well-adjusted peers

Some other ways that we, as a society of parents, are creating bratty kids are:

  • Making excuses for our kids’ bad behaviors (hitting/biting/etc.) by referring to them as a temporary stage and letting them go without consequence.
  • Not establishing expected behaviors from the beginning and not following through with age appropriate discipline for inappropriate or dangerous behaviors;
  • Being afraid of others judging us as “too harsh” or ruining our child’s self-esteem by disciplining them.
  • Failing to remove a misbehaving or melting down child from the situation so that others aren’t annoyed, instead teaching them they can act anyway they please and you just don’t care….
  • Not letting kids grow up/assume age-appropriate responsibility/accepting their maturity; instead attempting to keep them “innocent.”
  • Not restricting what kids watch on TV, not talking to kids about what they’re seeing in society as well as the media and not making clear how they are expected to behave.
  • Giving in to the whining when we tell our kids “No.”  Rewarding that behavior only makes them into more entitled brats….
  • Letting our children have a vote in how our households and/or lives are run.  Newsflash!  You are the parent!  You don’t need to negotiate or explain anything to get your child to agree to it. You need to take the reins and establish who is in charge so that the problem below does not occur.
  • Letting your child call you names, act disrespectfully toward you in front of other adults or their friends, or demand things without saying please or thank you – can we all say it together? “Out of control, disrespectful, entitled, spoiled brat!

The good news is that it is never too late to undo the damage ignoring the behavior, or chalking it up to a “stage that will pass” has already done.  As parents it IS our responsibility to fix the behaviors we helped instill.  Your kids will hate the changes (maybe) but their friends, teachers, coaches, future spouses, and bosses will thank you.  Start today!
